Over 1.2 billion people globally have no access to electricity and millions more have unreliable supply.
Instead many use dangerous, polluting and expensive kerosene lamps for light.
Is to help realise SDG 7 by designing products that provide clean, safe and reliable power for off-grid families.
Along our journey we have realised that the need for energy alternatives is universal: from camping in Canada, emergency preparedness in Puerto Rico, refugee camps in Rwanda, to off-grid families in the Okavango Delta.
Working closely with off- grid households, we designed nowlight based on ongoing and rigorous user testing and feedback. nowlight incorporates the best of GravityLight with cutting edge solar and battery technology to provide instant light and power. Anytime. Anywhere.
The cost of kerosene is prohibitive and often consumes up to 30% of a families income. It is an on-going expense that limits the amount of time families have to work, study and socialise.
nowlight pays for itself in 7 months. With PAYG functionality nowlight can be paid off in small installments ensuring it is accessible and affordable for all.
Accidental ingestion of kerosene is the leading cause of child poisoning in developing countries. It also causes burns, fires and cataracts as well as respiratory issues.
nowlightoffers clean, renewable light for families to cook, clean and do homework by.
Each year, kerosene lamps emit 270,000 tons of black carbon. The impact is climate warming, equivalent close to 240 million tons of CO2, or roughly 4.5% of the United States’ CO2 emissions.
By replacing a kerosene lamp nowlight eliminates 135kg of CO2e per year.
Current off-grid solutions are either limited by the sun or the availability of disposable batteries. nowlight produces instant light and power, whatever the weather with just the pull of a cord.
We are running in-home user trials with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies along with accelerated life testing to ensure nowlight is durable and reliable all year round for off-grid families.
